Full List of LTI Core Courses
We list below all current LTI core courses (followed
by a few normally non-core courses). Courses offered only at a
Master's level are listed first, followed by courses suitable for both
Masters and PhD students, grouped under their "Focus" areas
(the division into focus areas is only relevant for
LTI PhD students).
This list includes CS department courses that count as LTI core classes
(as opposed to electives). Further information about CS courses
should be available from the Computer Science
Department.
Depending on a student's interests, electives may be taken from
the LTI,
the Computer Science
Department, or other CMU or Pitt departments.
Students interested in speech should consider
speech-oriented electives;
other areas of interest include Linguistics,
Statistics,
and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
Note that the 11-791/11-792 sequence was previously called
Software Engineering for Language Technology (LT), but as of Spring 99
is called Software Engineering for Information Technology (IT). LTI
students will still be expected to pursue LT projects in this course
sequence.
Following the focus areas we list the self-paced labs and independent studies and seminars.
A numerical listing of
current LTI (11-xxx) courses is also available. This includes some non-core courses.
We expect to add a few
more courses in the future.
The University's list of current classes is available at the
Registrar's web site.

Speech course numbers have changed as of Spring2000.
Self-paced Labs
Since the labs are 6 units, they each count as 1/2 LTI core course for PhDs.
Selected Non-Core Courses: Independent Study
Note that the Independent Study courses listed below do
not normally count for LTI core credit. The
exception is if an Independent Study is used to replace an unavailable
LTI core course (with prior permission of the chair of the LTI graduate programs).
Here are the regular Independent Study course numbers.
Note: section letters are important! For independent study,
the section letter (by default, "A") determines which faculty member
is supervising your independent study. As a safety measure, "A"
always means the chair of the LTI graduate programs. If the
appropriate section does not exist, please ask the graduate
coordinator to create it for you.
Masters students: Note that only 12 units of
"Independent Study: Project" may normally count towards your total
course requirements (and may not count as part of the 96-unit LTI core
course requirement).
11-910 is used for Independent Study connected with a project; it is always Pass/Fail.
11-920 and 11-925 are normally
given a grade; 11-925 differs from 11-920 in that 11-925 is supervised
by your advisor, while 11-920 is supervised by some other faculty
member.
11-930 is used for a PhD student's thesis research after the
thesis proposal is accepted.
